Online Manuscript Resources in Southern Women’s
History
About This Site: Project Overview
Online
Manuscript Resources in Southern Women’s History
is an online collection of digitized manuscript, printed,
and visual materials drawn from the collections at the
Manuscript,
Archives, and Rare Book Library (MARBL) in the Robert
W. Woodruff Library at Emory University. The materials
on this site do not comprehensively represent all of
MARBL’s holdings, but they do offer insight into
some of the manuscripts available to researchers of
women’s history and the American South. This website
is intended to provide web access to prospective researchers
who plan to visit MARBL, researchers who are unable
to travel to MARBL and view the manuscripts in person,
researchers of Southern and women’s history who
are unfamiliar with MARBL’s holdings, and faculty
interested in the integration of archival materials
into the classroom.
The
purpose of this site is to provide online access to
selected manuscript resources in MARBL’s collections
and to increase awareness of and access to MARBL’s
collections in Southern and women’s history. This
site also offers selected "teaching
moments" that situate materials from disparate
collections under a common theme and provide additional
historical context, sample discussion questions, and
resources for further research. We hope that these “teaching
moments” provide successful examples of pedagogical
strategies for the integration of archival materials
into classroom environments through the use of digital
technology.
The
materials compiled and presented here span over a century
of history and include topics such as women’s
suffrage, beauty
culture, women
and socialism, and civil
rights. All materials are either directly related
to activities, persons, or organizations situated in
the American South, or were drawn from manuscript collections
of women who lived and worked in the South. Materials
related to Georgia, particularly Atlanta, are represented
strongly here, but a significant amount of material
relates to individuals and activities in other Southern
states, especially Mississippi and the Carolinas.
Materials
have been categorized by subject and by collection name.
Not all materials are included in the subject
guide; the most comprehensive way of viewing items
is by collection.
Individual images for most items have been provided
in both jpeg and pdf format. To view pdf images, you
will need Adobe Acrobat Reader which is available for
free at www.adobe.com.
Please note that images will open in a new browser window.
This
website was created by Anne Sinkey with the assistance
of the Manuscript,
Archives, and Rare Book Library staff and the financial
support of the Graduate
School of Arts and Sciences at Emory University.
Special thanks to Margaret McGehee for allowing us to
include her research on Southern digital collections
in our "Additional
Resources" page.
