Emory University seeks to make the materials held in MARBL as widely available to researchers as possible while insuring their preservation for future researchers. In service of this mission, MARBL will from time to time loan rare books and microforms to another repository so that a researcher unable to come to Emory might use them. At this time, MARBL does not loan original manuscript collections. MARBL will only loan original materials to another special collections for use by specific researchers. We will not loan such materials to individuals or to organizations other than trusted special collections repositories. MARBL may deny an ILL request if the material is fragile, if the material receives regular use at Emory, if the material is unique or valuable, or for any other reason. In some cases, MARBL will loan photocopies or other reproductions of materials rather than the originals.

Borrowing rare books

Researchers wishing to borrow books held in MARBL should contact the ILL office at their home institution to place the request. That office will then work with Emory’s ILL Office to determine whether the item can be loaned. These books will only be loaned to other special collections.
Additional information is available on the Emory ILL Office’s website:

Borrowing microforms

Researchers wishing to borrow microforms held in MARBL should contact the ILL office at their home institution to place the request. That office will then work with Emory’s ILL Office to determine whether the item can be loaned. Additional information is available on the Emory ILL Office’s website: http://web.library.emory.edu/services/ill/lending.html

Many microforms held in MARBL are also available for purchase. Please see Reproduction and Duplication Services: Microfilm for more information about the procedure and costs associated with purchasing a copy of a microform.
