The Emory Libraries provide access to additional research tools that might be helpful to researchers using MARBL materials. The resources marked as “Emory only” are available to only the Emory community and require a login and password.

Emory Libraries’ guides
These guides include research assistance, subject guides, and useful resources compiled by Emory librarians. The guides are organized by subject. Use them to expand your primary source research and to locate secondary sources.

Emory Libraries’ databases – most Emory only
Emory subscribes to many electronic databases. Some contain indexes, others provide access to full-text articles, books, and periodicals. You can search the database list for particular topics (like Jewish Studies) or for particular formats (like News Sources). Interested in digitized primary sources? Choose “Archives & Primary Sources” from the Category drop down box (above the search box) and click Go.

Biographical information


African American Biographical Database – Emory only
AABD includes profiles and full-text sketches providing both biographical detail and narratives chronicling the lives of Black Americans. The majority of the content comes from Black Biographical Dictionaries 1790-1950.

Ancestry Library Edition – Emory only
Try Ancestry if you are looking for genealogical information about a person or family. It includes: U.S. federal census roll images and indexes from 1790 to 1930; U.K. and Ireland census materials; vital and church records; passenger and immigration lists; military records; court, land, and probate records; historical maps; the American Genealogical Biographical Index, Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage books; WWI draft registration cards; slave narratives; and much more.

Literary Reference Center – Emory only
The Literary Reference Center is a good place to find author biographies and discussions of their work. It includes more than 10,000 plot summaries, synopses and work overviews; articles of literary criticism; author biographies; full text of over 300 literary journals; book reviews; 25,000 classic and contemporary poems; 11,000 classic and contemporary short stories; full text of over 7,500 classic novels; author interviews; and over 1,000 images of key literary figures.

Historical Newspapers


Digital -- Emory only
Emory subscribes to many collections of digitized historical newspapers. The full list is available through the Databases page. Search for “Archives and primary sources” from the Category drop down box, then browse the result list. Some examples: Atlanta Constitution Historical, 17th-18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers, and African-American Newspapers: 19th Century.

Microfilm and Originals
Emory also owns microfilm (and some original copies) of selected historical newspapers. The library maintains a list of these newspapers. All of the microfilm is located on the first floor of Woodruff Library. Issues and bound volumes with call numbers starting with “Spec coll” are located in MARBL. A guide to Atlanta newspapers in print and microfilm is also available.

Indexes to historical publications

Nineteenth Century Masterfile (Poole's Plus) – Emory only
The Masterfile allows you to search for people, places, events, and subjects in American and British publications dating from the 1700s through the early 1900s. It includes references to periodicals, books, and government documents. A small number of the publications are available in full text.
