A receipt for the trombone Dawson rented while playing with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.
In Chicago, Dawson also became the only African American member of the Chicago Civic Orchestra, the first training orchestra affiliated with a major symphony in the United States. He played first trombone with the 110-member group from 1926-1930. Despite the hostility he endured from some orchestra members, Dawson enjoyed a warm relationship with conductor Frederick Stock who shared with Dawson his extensive knowledge of Brahms and other German composers (Monroe, 52).
