Newspaper clipping about Cornelle Derrick Lampton Dawson
William Dawson married Cornella Derrick Lampton in 1927. Originally from Greenville, Mississippi, she was a performing artist and educator. She graduated from Oberlin in 1912, attended Howard University from 1912-1914, and took classes at the Howard Conservatory in 1915. An accomplished musician, she played organ at Quinn Chapel AME Church and performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Cornella died shortly after their marriage; Dawson dedicated “Out in the Fields,” based on a poem attributed to Louise Imogen Guiney, to her memory. Gamble Hinged Music Company published the song in 1930 (Standifer interview, archival materials).
