Program for the Semi-Finals Century of Progress (World's Fair) Band Concerts (Soldier's Field, Chicago, Illinois), 1 September 1929
In 1929, a competition was hosted by the Chicago Daily News to name a bandmaster for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, “Century of Progress.” When invited to audition, Charlie "Doc" Cook declined, and instead nominated Dawson for an audition for the esteemed position. Other conductors in the area possessed full bands and choruses and merely prepared for an audition with them. In stark contrast, Dawson assembled a brand new sixty-piece band and twenty voice chorus for his audition. Dawson was selected as the clear winner, and was named bandmaster for the African American division of the Fair (Monroe, 55; Spady, M2).
