Dozens of reviews appeared nationally following the performances in publications that included The Philadelphia Public Ledger, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Washington Daily News, The New York Times, and the New Yorker. A review in Anniston’s paper read: "Dawson's triumph seems to verify a statement that repeatedly has been made by the Anniston Star–That the first genuinely great American music would be written by a Negro." Dawson's former composition teacher Carl Busch wrote to congratulate Dawson. He called the work the "finest from an American that has been heard in many years."
