From modest beginnings, Dawson garnered numerous distinctions as a composer, arranger, educator and musician. He received honorary doctorates from Ithaca College in New York, Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, and Tuskegee University in Alabama, in addition to numerous citations and awards from the American Choral Directors Association, the University of Michigan, and the Maryland House of Delegates. Dawson was also listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World (archival materials).
