For Visiting Researchers

We invite you to come and explore MARBL’s rare books, manuscripts and archives. Emory is building these collections for the use of students, scholars and the general public. Everyone is welcome.

MARBL is one of three special collections at Emory. For more information about the special collections and archives at the Pitts Theology Library and the Emory University Archives, please visit their websites.

MARBL offers short-term fellowships to support scholarly use of the Library's research collections in two broad areas:

  • English-language literature
  • African American history and culture

Before you come

To prepare for your visit:

  • Explore MARBL’s research guides, catalogs and finding aids database and decide what you would like to see.
  • Read the Using MARBL section to learn more about requesting and using MARBL materials.
  • Check MARBL’s hours and holidays to make sure that we will be open when you would like to come. Please note that MARBL’s hours are different from those of the Robert W. Woodruff Library.
  • Contact us so that we can prepare for your visit. It will help us to know when you plan to come and what you would like to see.
  • Visit the Directions and Hours and the Accommodations sections for information about travel to Emory and the hotels closest to campus.

You must bring:

  • A photo id (required for registration)

You should consider bringing:

  • Checks or cash to pay for photocopies (MARBL cannot accept credit cards)
  • A camera (if there are no restrictions on the materials you wish to see)
  • A pencil, paper, and/or computer for your notes

During your visit

You will be asked to place all personal belongings not needed for research in a secure locker. The lockers cannot accommodate large back packs or luggage.

If you would like to get copies of the materials, there are several options. You can request photocopies, digital images or copies of audiovisual recordings. If the collection does not have reproduction restrictions, you may be able to use a personal camera to capture images of the materials.
